Houston, the Beloved Community Day
A group of diverse citizens of Houston have joined together to promote Houston as a "Beloved Community" in the spirit of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. who was assassinated on April 4, 1968. On April 4, 2011, Houston Mayor Annise Parker issued a proclamation declaring that day as "Houston, the Beloved Community Day". We plan to host a program on the Beloved Community on April 4 of each year.
A new book by Dave Atwood, Nonviolent People, is available from the San Antonio Peace Center.
The book provides an introduction to nonviolence and includes the nonviolent teachings of Jesus, St. Francis of Assisi, Gandhi, Martin Luther King, Jr., Dorothy Day, Cesar Chavez, Mother Teresa, Archbishop Desmond Tutu and Thich Nhat Hanh.
Dave also has two more books available from the San Antonio Peace Center, Detour to Death Row, and My Search for the Beloved Community. All three of these books are also available directly through Amazon.com.
Please contact us if you would like to schedule a talk, seminar or workshop on the Beloved Community.
